Christian Daniel Kiley, creator, writer and director of Unsure/Positive, was diagnosed with HIV in 2007. He experienced a high degree of self-stigmatization: he was afraid that HIV made him dirty, damaged…unlovable. Like many other young gay men in our society, he was in denial and certain that parts of his life could never be seen in a positive light.
Years passed before he found the courage to tell his immediate family. When he finally did come out of the closet, there was a groundswell of support. As well as something he hadn’t expected: hope. With the help of a therapist and regular exercise, Christian discovered what is called mindful living. He threw himself into his work. Slowly but surely, things turned around.
“Now I’m lucky enough to be productive, healthy, and working on Unsure/Positive, a project that is deeply important to me.”
—Christian
